The hotel is old school and definitely dated but I am giving it 4 stars because the staff is delightful and the property has charm. The beds were decent but the pillows were horrible. I am a down pillow person so hard, lumpy foam was "no bueno" but at the end of the day, that really didn't matter that much. I had a great overnight stay and I liked the place a lot. I sat on the lovely little terrace area by the pool and enjoyed a New Glarus Berliner Weisse before supper as the sun was going down. I walked into town and bought enough cheese to sink a ship and even found one shop that stayed open past 5pm! I had dinner at another place in the village that was good but I wish I had eaten at the hotel or at their sister restaurant in the village. I have definitely decided that I am not a huge fan of traditional Swiss food---especially in August! I did however see a few menu choices at the hotel that I think I would have liked better. The breakfast in the morning was simple but satisfying and again the staff was just lovely, taking time to chat and making guests feel welcome. The cheese was delish! New Glarus is a special place and this hotel fits the town perfectly. I can see visiting here a few times per year since it is actually really close to Chicago but feels like it's thousands of miles away in a different era. I will definitely go back and I will probably bring my own pillow :)

Watch out...I'm going against the grain here and say that we REALLY enjoyed the food here. Starting off with the special house salad with an array of Eastern European specialties like beats, potato salad, sour kraut, and greens in a house made ranch style dressing. So good. Then had the geschnetzeltes (veal in a mushroom sauce) was incredible. Add the spatzles (Swiss cheese dumpling) and it was great. We also has the potato bacon soup that we really enjoyed. My son had the kids spagetti with this smoked like sauce that was to die for. Kind of a chipotle flavor without the spice. He ate all of not which is unusual for him. Finally, we had the Oreo chocolate cake which was good and surprisingly moist. Of course...it doesn't hurt that they had a great selection of new glarus brews that you can enjoy there or take to go. I had the binder and fat squirrel that night. Would really come back here for sure. Would give this a 5 star if it wasn't for the kind of rude service and unusually high prices.

We stayed here just for one night when visiting New Glarus Brewery. Nice staff, clean hotel. The decor is very "old Swiss" themed and quaint. Refrigerator in room and free wifi are a good benefit from a small hotel. Walking/bike trail in back provides a very short walk to some nearby restaurants. We didn't try the restaurant or pool.

This is the second time in four years we've stayed here and we were happily impressed by its updates, especially in the way of WiFi. The hotel does a nice job of carrying New Glarus's required Swiss style to its architecture and decor, while not being cliche about it. Our room was nice, comfy, quiet and very clean. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Our morning breakfast was a real breakfast, rather than the horrid continental breakfasts chain hotels serve. The hotel is right off the Sugar River Bike Trail, making it an easy stop for bicyclists. It's also an quick 2-3 block walk to downtown New Glarus and its many quaint shops and restaurants.

We stayed here for one night on a recent trip though the area. It is an older property but the old-world-charm of the structure and the cheerfulness of the staff made us feel very welcome. While the beds and bedding were of typical hotel stock, they were very comfortable. My traveling companion has back issues and had no problems getting comfortable. The bath towels were nicely sized and clean. I did however, notice one of the wash cloths was stained. Overall, the room was very clean and having a small refrigerator and wireless internet is always a nice touch! My only disappointment is that we didn't have the opportunity to try the on-site restaurant (it was a Monday night in February, thus closed). The complimentary continental breakfast offered in the morning was ok but I really would have liked to the option of a hot cooked breakfast. I would stay here again...perhaps next time with my hubby for a romantic get away.

With limited options in town, we saw the sign for breakfast. Really nothing spectacular going on here. Bland eggs and cheesy potatoes, and a lot of pastries, that I would have a hard time calling fresh, but then again I was looking for more. The coffee is "meh". Overall nothing was horrible, but nothing stood out as being worth another stop, and for the price I would have expected more. I had a $5.99 breakfast for $11.99. This was buffet style, no menu to order from.

If I at least have some "fair warning" prior to being shafted by a 1-2-star hotel in a tiny, off-the-beaten-path town, I don't feel so bad. Unfortunately, no warning was given. Family made the reservation for us--informed them that we'd have 3 guests in the room. They gave us a room with a King bed. When we told them that would not fly, they seemed extremely put out. Once they "finally" found a room with 2 twin beds for us, they promptly upped the price $30+ and said that all fees were payable prior to check-in. Strike One. The pool looked like it hadn't been upgraded in 20 years or cleaned in 20 weeks. So much for their advertising . . . I had brought my swimsuit with me but refused to dip my foot in the water - which others in my party told me was cold. Strike 2. So then off to the advertised "business center." The girl behind the counter says, "oh we don't have a business center - but if you want to use the computer, go into that little room over there." Said room was a bit bigger than a closet. The computer was so old that its CD drive was marked as "Compact Disc" in the same font as was used in 1985. Not CD, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM; 1985 version "Compact Disc." Manufacture date around 1993? When I turned it on, it took 5 minutes to boot and sounded like it was going to explode. It would not load the Internet with FireFox, so I had to use IE. Slow is a gracious description. Ran Disk Cleanup in an effort to free up some space--15 minutes with no effect. Also attempted to run CCleaner but the internet was so slow that it took me 5 minutes to get to the actual website and would not download. After 30 wasted minutes, I gave up. Strike 3. Thank God I wasn't expecting a really important email or anything. I am sure a Costco in Madison will sell you backwards mopes an updated guest computer for less than $1,000. PS: advertised wireless internet did not work AT ALL in the room. Beds were cheap and not all that comfortable--something you'd expect in a 1-2-star hotel. Services . . . not sure you'd even call them that. Restaurant advertised as "Fine Dining." Uh, not by any stretch of the imagination. Told us that even with 9 tables on the patio (only 2 were occupied) all available seating was RESERVED FOR THE REST OF THE NIGHT. Why were they were so reticent to serve us? Was it because we were dressed in cargo pants and T-Shirts? Or because we had 2 kids with us? Or because we are bi-racial couples with bi-racial babies speaking 2-3 different languages? Not sure . . . but after insisting with management that they probably needed to feed their own guests, they relented after a 20-minute debate. Interesting to note that of those 9 tables, we occupied 1 for the next 2 hours and, during that same time, all but 3 remained VACANT. So much for your "100% reserved for the rest of the night" comments. Liars? Bigots? Both? Service was abysmal. Got the impression that bi-racial and multiple languages are "not acceptable" up in BFE New Glarus, that middle-of-nowhere seat of American antiquity and elevated class (please note the sarcasm here). Why it took 2 hours to be served and eat is beyond me. Could not get my water glass refilled for the first hour. 45 minutes after ordering, as we were just finishing up our $10.50 cheese curds (which were good, but not worth $10.50), the waitress tells us that she's "right now" going to put in our food order. Uh . . . why? The food was way overpriced; tasty, but nothing to write home about and CERTAINLY not on-par with the "Fine-Dining" cuisine I've enjoyed in 32 United States and 3 foreign countries. Price for 4 dinners, 2 beers, 2 coffees and 1 dessert: $105+. Asked to split the bill between 2 credit cards and the waitress says that it cannot be done . . . they do not have the technology. I was going to dispute this, but then I remembered my earlier experience in the "Business Center" and figured that this might not be too outside reality for this establishment. I did NOT leave a tip . . . none was deserved. Fast-forward to breakfast. I will echo the other reviews - nothing AT ALL to write home about. Thankfully, this was included with the price of the room. I was shocked to see that the same waitress who had served us the night before (and probably knocked off at 10-11 PM) was at the 7 AM Brunch - is this the best way to stagger your staff's shifts so that they get enough sleep and are ready to serve at their best? Based on that . . . AND ONLY ON THAT . . . I left a tip for both Brunch and the previous evening's dinner. The other waitress who showed us the "nasty face" for speaking 2 languages . . . go jump in a lake, you ignorant redneck. NEVER coming back here. Buyer beware. MAYBE you'll have a better time if you are lily-white and speak Wisconsin English ONLY. Next time we'll drive the extra 33 miles to Madison.

Nice place to stay in New Glarus. Price is reasonable. Complimentary breakfast was a little lacking for me. Lots of pastries. I prefer some kind of eggs -- I guess I'm spoiled, I want a few quiches and souffles -- it's not breakfast to me without eggs. All the same, I'd definitely stay at this inn again. Great pool, great whirlpool, good room.

Friendly service, but a bit slow. There were a few large parties, so I think things got backed up in the kitchen. Our meals were wonderful, but too expensive.

Stayed and ate here on a recent ski trip. The breakfast was oustanding, mostly on the strength of one dish: roesti. They are Swiss style hash browns. Never even heard of them before but now am making them at home. In addition, the breakfast sausages were tasty and much less fat in them than you usually get while dining out. I like that! Also had dinner here, and outside of the roesti that came with dinner, I would say it was just ok and several bucks too high for what you get. The hotel was nice and clean, we didn't use the pool or suana. I would use the hotel again in the future. Later learned the b-fast sausages served here were from one of the local meat markets, Hoesly's. We stopped by Hoesly's on our way out of town, and loaded up on brats, sausages, etc. Good stuff. Also stopped in Puemple's Olde Tavern and recommend that. Old hand painted murals on the wall, ask the bartender to tell you the story of how they came to be!

This place was great, your typical Wisconsin rustic charm... Friendly staff and you get a fantastic breakfast buffet gratis. New Glarus was neat, bring a bike and don't miss the brewery.

I really liked this place. It was adorable, the staff was sweet as pie, and it was very relaxing. What people don't get, is I believe they're going for an old-time vibe. True, it's a little pricey, but look at where you are. They can kind of get away with it and they're in a prime location in the little town. Less than a block away from everywhere we wanted to go! Also, when I called the night before for a reservation, they were very easy to talk to and didn't make me feel like a jerk for such short notice. I also called the next morning for an early check-in (we were desperate and had to ditch our campsite) they were very very nice about it, and were even kind enough to wave the fee!

Went to the buffet. Walked in to the restaurant about 5pm to find the restaurant empty but the hostess said we couldn't be seated without reservations. A teenage server admonished the nitwit hostess and did seat us. The food was decent, I couldn't tell the difference between Swiss and German food though. Skip this place and go somewhere else, not worth the price and I have heard from others that the service is more typical of what we received from the hostess.

When visiting New Glarus to visit their wonderful brewery, my boyfriend and I decided we would stay in town for the night, so we could bar hop and drink all the New Glarus we could get our hands on, since it's only available in Wisconsin. The only choices we really had were this hotel, or the motel down the road - being the lesser of the two evils, we chose the hotel. Walking in, you feel like you've been transported to a different country, and probably a decade ago, at that. The room was clean enough, but the bed was HARD, and the bedding cheap. There was a tiny crappy TV in the room, which we couldn't fix to make the picture any clearer. The heat was unbearably hot, but each room has their own controls, so we turned ours almost to cold - I guess which is better than it being too cold, since it was in the single digits while we were there. The whirlpool was out of order while we were there, which stunk - there was also a pool, but we didn't check it out. The bar and restaurant also happened to be closed the night we stayed (on a Monday), so that was also a disappointment, as it would have been nice to sit in the bar later in the evening rather than be out in the cold. The hotel is close to the "downtown" area of New Glarus, so getting to the few bars and restaurants in the area was quick and easy. With your stay, you also get a free continental breakfast, or $2 off something off their breakfast menu. The continental breakfast looked okay - lots of pastries, cereal, fruit, etc, but nothing warm. I opted to order an omelet, which was pretty good, considering it only cost me a few bucks with the coupon. Overall, it was an okay place to stay - my biggest pet peeve was the price point. For this type of hotel, I would have expected $50-$60/night - but they wanted over $100! Are you crazy?! I guess they can charge what they want, though - seeing as the only other place we could find to stay was the motel down the road - which I'm sure, would have been worse. But seriously? When you're charging people that much, please take all the money you're making and make some upgrades - new beds and linens to start, as well as some better TVs. We probably wouldn't stay here again - and opt to drive a little further and stay in a bigger town with a few more options.

It was lucky that I even stayed here because the Chalet Laundhaus does not allow one to make reservations online. I found this very unusual in this day and age, especially since they do have a website. I actually had to make a phone call and convey all my information such as address and credit card verbally. This blast from the past was a hint of what was to come. The Landhaus is a quaint looking hotel in New Glarus right on highway 69. Checkin went smoothly and I was soon walking up the old fashioned staircase to my 2nd floor room. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was the stifling heat in the room. I realize that hotels are trying to save money, but it would go a long way in the customer goodwill department if they turned on the climate control for the rooms that they have guests booked for. I turned on the A/C unit to the highest cooling setting and then left to go to dinner at a local restaurant. When I returned to the room it was still as hot as when I left. I fiddled with the unit but it obviously was not capable of producing cool air. I briefly considered opening the windows, because it wasn't really very warm outside. It only took about 1 minute to realize that the highway noise right outside the window made this a bad choice. I went to the front desk to ask for another room with working A/C. The clerk didn't seem very concerned that about the problem in my room, but she did offer up another room. The odd thing was that she actually offered me a room with two double beds even though I was currently in a king bed room. I indicated that would not be acceptable. Then she somewhat reluctantly offered up a king room that I later found was an upgrade. The only problem is that it was hot as hell. The A/C was working, but it took a couple hours to get the temperature down. The TV in my first room was a 19" tube version. I couldn't believe how old it was. In my second room there was reasonably sized flat screen TV. I thought it was a funny distinction between rooms. The new room was also bigger and did not feel stuffed with furniture like my first one. They gave me a wi-fi password, but my computer could not even detect any wi-fi in my room on the 3rd floor. This was pretty pathetic. They shouldn't claim to offer it, if it isn't going to work. Having been at many other places with this computer, I knew it was not my equipment. So in the morning I went down for the continental breakfast buffet that is offered as part of the room rate. The location was hidden around a couple of corners that made it difficult for first timers to understand. There was even a sign that indicated that I should wait to be seated, but after five minutes nobody seemed to notice me. That is when I started to search deeper and found that I could just seat myself. When I found the one waitress and mentioned the sign to her, she indicated that it was for the weekend. I suggested that it be taken down during the week then. That didn't seem to sink in with her. The breakfast spread consisted of a variety of pastries and bagels. There was apple, orange, and cranberry juice. The waitress brought coffee. For an extra charge you could order hot food, but we didn't bother because the waitress seemed very flustered trying to handle the 4 tables of people that were present. There is supposedly a premium buffet offered on the weekends. Unfortunately I was staying on a weekday. It was not particularly impressed with the food offerings. Overall, I would have a hard time recommending the Landhaus. I wanted to like it for its quaintness and convenient location, but it was all the little things that weren't quite right. The room wasn't cheap. I expected better.

Brunch options on a Saturday before 10am are SO limited in this area...the only grub we could find open and serving was the Chalet. They served one thing, a basic brunch buffet. The hot part of the buffet included cheesy scrambled eggs, cheesy hashbrowns and sausage and ham. The continental part of the buffet included an obscene amount of pastries: cheese and apple Danishes, scones in a variety of flavors, mini muffins, flaky pastry rolls filled with creamed cheese, cinnamon rolls and croissants. Fruit salad...not all the fruit was cut well, some pieces still had the edges of the rind on them. Cereal, think fruity pebbles. Yogurt and granola. Juice; orange, apple & cranberry juice. And milk, water, and coffee of course. None of it was memorable, none of it was grand, none of it was worth even writing about, none of it was worth a second helping. The buffet table was nothing special, literally three dining tables lined up with the food on top. Kitchen staff kept coming out to check on the hot food pans...which were nearly empty when we went to get our breakfast plates. They must have check the pans 4 times; right before we were seated, while we were waiting for our drinks to come out, WHILE we were at the buffet and again after we sat down. There could not have been more than 2 cups of eggs and 1 cup of hashbrowns in the pans and the heat on the breakfast meats was way too hot...they were caramelizing and burning to the bottom of their pans. This is a HUGE peeve for me, I've worked in hospitality and you NEED to keep your food dishes FULL. People eat with their eyes, no one want to come to a buffet and feel like they are getting the leftovers...or whats left of breakfast. After we actually sat down and were almost done eating they came out with new pans full of all the hot stuff. FML...either they suck at timing or they SUCK at timing. Total $25.21...they really think they are SOME kind of "special" that I just don't get. If you ask me it's way over priced for in every area; quality, service and presentation.

With not many places open early for breakfast, we came upon Chalet Landhaus. The food and the portions for the price make it a good value. We opted to order off the menu instead of the continental buffet, and the by the look of it, I'm glad we did. The waiter was good, almost too good to the point he was around a little too much, but I'll take that over someone who is constantly MIA. I wish we were in town longer to check out their Thursday BBQ cookout on the patio.

This is a beautiful, clean, friendly hotel in New Glarus. Breakfast was way better than you would get most anywhere. I don't normally use words like "charming" or "cozy", but this fine, well-run establishment is just those things and more.
